The 5 Ws of Stitching

  • Posted on April 30, 2008 at 12:47 pm

To answer a meme proposed by Barbara, here are my 5 Ws of Stitching:

Who taught you to stitch, and were there any special circumstances or memories surrounding this?
My mother taught me to cross stitch when I was able 11 years old or so. I didn’t have any earlier introduction to stitching, like stamped cross stitch or embroidery; just straight into cross stitching. I remember my first project was the little owl kit that was so popular back then. Anyone remember that?

What’s your favorite thing to stitch? (A project, a kind of stitching, etc.)
I think that I like band samplers the best. That and hardanger projects. 🙂

Why do you stitch?
Like many others, I stitch because it’s relaxing to me. At least, most of the time it is, unless I’m having a frog attack. It’s also nice to finish pieces. If I could finish some bigger ones, I would definitely feel more of a sense of accomplishment. I’m working on it…

When is your special stitching time?
I like to stitch on the weekends. Particularly on Sundays, when life slows down a bit.

Where is your special stitching place? (An accompanying picture would be great!)
I have my stitching corner in the living room where I have my Ott Lite and a folding table serving as an end table to catch my current stitching tidbits. I also have a lined basket squeezed in on the floor next to the television stand that contains some of my WIPs and next projects.

Here’s an older picture of my stitching corner. Things are a bit messier at the moment, but this was on a good day. 😉

I’ve been tagged by both Meari and prajantr for this one, so I guess I’d better do it.

Here are the rules:

1. Once you are tagged, link back to the person who tagged you.

2. Post THE RULES on your blog.

3. Post 7 weird or random facts about yourself on your blog.

4. Tag 7 people and link to them

5. Comment on their blog to let them know they have been tagged

7 Weird or Random Facts About Me

  1. I have this thing about eating things in rainbow order. This mostly applies to candies, like Skittles, M&Ms, Smarties, you name it. I have no idea where this came from.
  2. My eyes apparently change color, according to Terry. I traditionally thought that they were blue-grey, but Terry says that they often look green, so that’s what color he considers them to be.
  3. My legal name is Jennifer. However, at the tender age of 1 1/2, I declared that I was to be called Jenna. And it stuck. 🙂
  4. I can never have acrylic nails because my nail beds are too irregular. My ring and pinky finger nail beds are properly curved, but the rest of my nail beds are relatively flat. I was told by a manicurist that acrylics wouldn’t stay put on a flat nail bed.
  5. I love almonds. Love ’em. L-O-V-E, love.
  6. I’m starting to like the colors pink and red more than ever before. But my favorite’s still purple. 😉
  7. As a baby, I accidentally scratched my mother’s corneas and created scar tissue so that she could never wear contact lenses.

I’m not big on tagging specific people, so if you’re reading this, you haven’t already done it and you feel so inclined, consider yourself tagged.

Christmas Meme

As seen on Anna’s blog:

  1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
  2. Both, but mostly wrapping paper.

  3. Real tree or artificial?
  4. Artificial. I can’t see sacrificing a tree for my decorating purposes. Plus, it keeps us from worrying about Phoebe getting into dropped needles or the tree water.

  5. When do you put up the tree?
  6. Sometime after Terry’s birthday on Dec. 8th.

  7. When do you take the tree down?
  8. Sometime in January.

  9. Do you like egg nog?
  10. Yep. I need to buy some the next time we’re at the grocery store, actually. I usually add some nutmeg to it.

  11. Favorite gift received as a child?
  12. Either my Easy Bake oven or my Hippity Hop. If you don’t know what it is, a Hippity Hop was a large ball with a handle on it that you could sit on and bounce around everywhere.

  13. Do you have a nativity scene?
  14. No.

  15. Hardest person to buy for?
  16. My father-in-law. He buys everything he wants, when he wants it. I make him Terry’s problem. 😉

  17. Easiest person to buy for?
  18. Probably my mother. I can usually give her something homemade, plus something retail.

  19. Mail or e-mail Christmas cards?
  20. Snail mail. Though I tend to run out of cards.

  21. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
  22. More like worst set of Christmas gifts received. One year, after my parents divorced, I gave a whole list to my dad and he didn’t get me one single thing on the list! Sorry, Dad, I love you, but I was really bummed.

  23. Favorite Christmas movie?
  24. Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol

  25. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
  26. Early fall. Can’t start too early, unless it’s a stitched item, because you run the risk of the recipient buying the gift for themselves.

  27. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
  28. Probably, but I can’t remember anything specific.

  29. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
  30. Everything. 😉 Peanut butter kiss cookies.

  31. Clear lights or colored on the tree?
  32. Multi-colored, please.

  33. Favorite Christmas song?
  34. I don’t think I have a favorite.

  35. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
  36. Stay home. When we bought the house, we declared that everyone would come to us. 🙂

  37. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?
  38. Yep. The Rudolph song is forever burned into my brain.

  39. Angel on the tree top or a star?
  40. A star, of course. But someday it will be an angel with hardanger wings and gown.

  41. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
  42. Both. Terry and I open our presents to each other on Christmas Eve. We open presents with my parents in the morning, then presents with his parents when they arrive.

  43. Most annoying thing about this time of year?
  44. The over-commercialization of Christmas. Stores start carrying Christmas items way too early!

  45. Favorite ornament theme or color?
  46. Favorite ornament theme would be handmade. I was lax this year in finishing items, but I woud eventually like to have the majority of my ornaments be handmade.

  47. Favorite thing for Christmas dinner?
  48. Turkey. Since Terry’s allergic to poultry, this is about the only time of year that I get turkey!

  49. What do you want for Christmas this year?
  50. To be happy.

Love, Hate and More

  • Posted on July 28, 2007 at 11:10 am

I was tagged by Coral a little while ago, but have been so behind on my blog reading that I didn’t realize it. So, here we go!

Rules of the game…
Once you have been tagged, copy and paste your answers onto your blog and leave a comment on the taggee’s blog so they can come back and read what you wrote. Let the tagging begin.

I love it when: I am happy.

I hate it when: People are unkind and/or unhelpful, especially those with service jobs.

I cry when: Whenever. Good movies make me cry. Depression makes me cry. Hormones make me cry.

I remember when: Strawberry Shortcake was out the first time. Gosh I loved those dolls and stuff!

I laugh when: Terry makes me laugh. He’s the only one who can predictably get me to laugh or smile.

I’m good at: Starting up a business in a fairly short period of time, apparently. 😉

I’m very good at: Pretty much whatever I apply myself to.

I’m bad at: cleaning the house. I don’t like having a messy or dirty house, but I can’t seem to make myself find the time to do anything about it.

I’m very bad at: being patient. Patience is not my strong suit.

My most daring adventure: My current journey to self-discovery. It takes courage to face yourself and accept your strengths and weaknesses as you find them.

I tag: Whomever feels like playing along.

8 Random Things About Me

  • Posted on May 15, 2007 at 12:53 pm

I’ve been tag team tagged! First by Laura, now by Suz. I guess that means that I have to get my rear into gear.

First the Rules.

1. Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves
2. People who are tagged write a blog post about their own 8 random things and post these rules
3. At the end of your blog you need to tag 8 people and post their names
4. Don’t forget to leave them a comment and tell them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

8 Random Facts:

8 random facts about myself, eh? I blab so much about myself that I can’t remember what I haven’t already said…

  1. I wish I was a redhead. I’m very proud of my Irish descent and wish that I had the looks to go along with the temper to prove it.
  2. I have more problems with pimples and break-outs now than I had as a teenager.
  3. I love Tigger. Tigger is my hero (except that he’s a little flaky).
  4. I love kids, but I have no intentions of having any of my own. In fact, Terry’s considering getting snipped sometime in the near future, but the permanence/finality of the decision scares me, in case I change my mind!
  5. I like chocolate milk. I like chocolate milk. (Gratuitous cartoon reference)
  6. I love cheese. Cannot get enough. I also like Cheese (see above note).
  7. I hate carbonation. Hate it. Can’t stand. Won’t drink anything containing it, if I have a choice. I like my soda flat.
  8. I can belch when I want to. I mean long, loud, sometimes I get cut off because Terry starts laughing at me, burps. No carbonation needed. Hence the previous item.

Who am I tagging? Who hasn’t already done this? Anyone who feels like doing this, consider yourself tagged. 🙂

  1. What makes you laugh?
  2. Terry. 🙂 He can drag a laugh out of me, even when I stubbornly try to resist. He also has one of the best, heartiest laughs that makes you smile just hearing it.

  3. What is your favorite song?
  4. I love music across many genres and I could not possibly pick just one. When it comes to classical music, Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings is my favorite piece. I find it to be very moving. My favorite pop group is Coldplay and my favorite pop artist (right now) is KT Tunstall. I like to sing along to KT Tunstall’s songs because they are mostly within my range, though her vocal range goes lower than mine.

  5. On average, how much time do you spend stitching each day?
  6. About 2 hours on weeknights, if I’m lucky. I’m throwing out the last couple of weeks because they are a significant outlier that throws off the calculation.

  7. What is your favorite sleeping position?
  8. Without a doubt, it is on my right side with my hands tucked up under the pillow and my knees bent. That’s right, the fetal position on my right side. All I’m missing is the thumb sucking. 😉

  9. Have you ever been out of the country?
  10. I answered this for Angela, but I’ll put more detail into it this time. Terry has relatives in Saint John, New Brunswick in Canada, so I have been there once and will be there again in July for Terry’s dad’s wedding. In 2000, Terry and I went with his parents on a trip to the United Kingdom. We spent a week in London (during one of their worst heatwaves ever, in a hotel with no air conditioning) and a week traveling through Scotland. I’ve seen Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. I’ve been in Inverness. We visit a textile shop where a master tartan weaver worked, the one who had developed the tartan for the Isle of Skye, I believe. I’ve seen many castles, including the one that housed the French taunters in Monty Python’s Holy Grail movie. I’ve seen brilliant greens like you have never seen before in your life and will probably never see outside of Ireland and Scotland. Since that trip, I’ve been to Scotland for work twice and we’ve been back to London several times; it’s our favorite holiday spot.

Anna: (I just had to laugh at your comment on James Lipton!)

  1. What is your favorite word?
  2. Love.

  3. What is your least favorite word?
  4. C***. It is the single most harsh and painful word in the English language, at least in my opinion. The mere pronunciation of it cuts like a knife and it should never, ever be used in reference to a woman. NEVER. In fact, I wish the word had never come into existence.

  5. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
  6. I find that I am the most at peace and well balanced late at night or in the early morning hours, when no one else is awake and the house is quiet and still. Late nights have always been my most creative time, ever since I churned out a very long poem at 2 AM one night when I was a teenager. I don’t know why, but my mind tends to churn out things while I’m falling asleep or asleep. To the point where I have to keep a notepad beside my bed because I’ll sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for a design or a graphic or some other random idea. Spiritually, I am fueled by deep conversations with Terry and with my (step)dad. And emotionally… well, that doesn’t take much. I am a very emotional person.

  7. What turns you off?
  8. Stress. It’s a killer for anything creative, spontaneous, spiritual, sexual, etc.

  9. What is your favorite curse word?
  10. B****. It’s so overused now that it’s kind of a fun word. So and so is in full b**** mode today. That project was a total b****. Very versatile. 😆 F*** is a really good one, too. I use it very sparingly and usually when I really want to grab someone’s attention, but it sometimes slips out more when I’m stressed out and talking privately to Terry. If I use it in public, though, you know something is up.

  1. What are your religious beliefs?
  2. Ahhh, what a question! People feel so strongly about religious beliefs and I’m not mainstream, so I hope that the answer to this question won’t cause people to think of me any differently or not to like me anymore. 🙁 My parents were both raised strict Roman Catholic and followed this religion through their marriage and then some. My brother was baptized but never confirmed. By the time I was born, my parents had separated from the Catholic church. My mother didn’t like the answers she received from priests when she asked about birth control and some other topics. As a result, I was raised outside of any organized religion. When I was a child, I was taught how to meditate as part of the Transcendental Meditation movement. My entire life, I have looked into different religions including Christianity, Hinduism and Buddism. I have taken learnings from each of them that resonate with me at my core and incorporated them into my spirituality. I consider myself to actually be very spiritual, just not in the traditional sense. I spend time contemplating deep issues, like life outside of this one. I tend to take a scientific approach to my spirituality, as well. I chalk that up to being such a technical person and find that other techies take a similar approach to their beliefs, as well.

  3. What inspired them?
  4. I think I answered part of this question above, but part of my beliefs have been inspired by my mother’s continuing quest to expand and grow her spiritual beliefs. This quest has spanned several decades and many different areas, which has helped me to widen my areas of thought.

  1. Who is your favourite cross stitch designer?
  2. At this point, I would have to say Sandie Vanosdall of The Sweetheart Tree. I love her designs, plus I have met her in person and spoken with her over the phone. She’s a very lovely person.

  3. Can you play a musical instrument?
  4. Absolutely! My mother was a professional flutist, so naturally I followed in her footsteps. I play flute and piccolo. I am lamely trying to teach myself piano, but there’s a world of difference between the flute and piano…

  5. Do you drive and if so, what make of car?
  6. Believe it or not, I can and do drive every once in a while. I even go out by myself sometimes! 😆 Terry has a control issue about driving and safety, so he usually drives if we’re together. I am the proud owner of a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid in silver. I like not having to spend quite so much on gas.

  7. What is your favourite season of the year?
  8. Autumn. It cold be because I was born in that season, but mostly it’s because there’s a slight chill in the air, so I am more comfortable (I overheat easily). Also, I love the colors of the leaves once they’ve turned and the crisp, clean smell in the air. There are more reasons, too, but I don’t want to get boring. 😉

  9. Do you own any pets?
  10. Ah yes, our beloved furbaby, Phoebe. She’s an 8-year old orange and cream colored Pomeranian who is the love of our lives. She has an entire set of albums dedicated to her in my gallery.

  1. Are you intending giving up work when the ONS takes off?
  2. If, after a couple of years, the ONS is doing well enough, I would consider giving up my day job. I am convinced that Cathy and I will be able to open a brick and mortar shop someday. In the meantime, if I start getting swamped with orders, I would consider going part-time. Fact is, though, I really like the money I’m making right now.

  3. Do you believe most of your health problems are due to work pressure?
  4. I believe that most of my problems are due to my anxiety. That can be aggravated by any number of circumstances, not the least of which is work. It is no secret that I am not exactly where I want to be. I would like to be excited about going to work every day and to be doing work that I absolutely love with limited stressors, but I don’t know that such a beast exists. If it does, it remains an elusive and as-yet undefined species. 🙂

  5. Do you and Terry intend having any children?
  6. Hah-hah. The inevitable question to which we have an answer, but not an easy one. Nor is it a decision that we have made lightly. We have conversations about this fairly often (especially after visiting with other couples who have children), but always reach the same conclusion. The answer to that question is no, we do not intend to have any children. That answer could change someday, but every time we weigh all of the factors, it comes out the same. This tends to be a very loaded question, but the plain and simple truth is that we have chosen not to have any children.

  7. How are your relationships with your parents currently (all of them)?
  8. Fortunately, I can answer this question very positively right now. I feel very comfortable in my relationships with all three of my dads (father, step-father and father-in-law) and with my new mother-in-law-to-be and my step-mother. I still struggle in my relationship with my mother, mostly because she wants to go back to the very close bond that we had years ago but I have bonded strongly with my mate. That relationship eclipses all others. 🙂

  9. How does Terry feel about your stitching?
  10. Terry is supportive of my hobbies, unless they cause me stress. When I have been overcommitted in the past, it is no longer fun for me, nor is it an outlet for stress. When it reaches that point, he always tries to talk some sense into me, although he rarely succeeds. I have an incredibly stubborn streak, especially when it comes to commitments that I have made; just ask Cathy (re: finishing her round robin)! He tends not to buy me much stash, though, saying that I buy enough for myself. 😉
