The End of an Era

*sigh*

This is a post that has been a little while in coming, but one of my all-time favorite TV series came to an end a few weeks ago. Charmed was one of those rarer programs that ran for many years (8 years, I believe), even managing to sustain the plotline through a major change in actresses. The lead character was played by Shannen Doherty, who left the show after 3 years, which created a problem when the plotline requires three witches, all of whom are sisters. The writers were presented with the challenge of killing off the main character, promoting another character to the lead and bringing on a completely new character into the tightly-knit trio, who also needed to be blood-related. It was a really difficult and creative challenge to which the writers rose beautifully and incredibly. They created a series of events which allowed for all of the changes necessary to keep the plotline consistent and coherent. But, I digress…

I am certainly going to miss my weekly dose of magic and fantasy. A one-hour span in which you know that everything will end up okay, even if it has to spill over a few episodes (as the last several shows adequately presented), and good always triumphs over evil. In reality, good and evil need to maintain a precarious balance, but it’s still nice to think that life, and the world, is generally good.

I know they wrapped nearly everything up in one nice and neat bundle (there are a few little holes that I think will be filled in by me watching some reruns), but it left a little bit of ache in my heart. I enjoyed watching such strong, beautiful women kick bad guy fanny. 😀

The good thing is that this will help to weaken the link between me and the TV. Yes, I would like to lessen TV’s evil grasp on me so that I can spend time doing other things, like schoolwork (if I go in that direction), self-learning, meditation, crafting, cleaning or just whatever!

I have finally started watching Charmed here in Germany. When it debuted in the US I had to work the night it was on so I only saw a few episodes here and there.

They are showing reruns of it here in Germany now and I watch it every afternoon and have just started Season Four with Paige. I wasn’t sure if I would like her character, but so far she is turning out OK!

Along with the Gilmore Girls, this might actually be one TV show I might buy on DVD! 🙂

Oh I didn’t know it was ending 🙁 I can’t say that I liked Shannon Doherty much and from what I’ve read, she was fired in the end, just like in Beverly Hills 90210.

I will have to maybe save and get the DVD’s, I’ve never watched all of them because it’s on at a time when the ‘evil’ child has her TV time – hmm let me think, that’s all the time if we’re not busy :o)
