New Computers

Here I am, running though the various, seemingly infinite number of tasks that are required when you acquire a new computer and have to move all of your data, programs, etc. to the new machine. My new laptop for work came in nearly two weeks ago and was just sitting around in the back, so I finally went out Wednesday morning and just grabbed it and all of the stuff that came with it. I only have so much patience, so when our desktop support guy (and yes, I should have sympathy for him, since I used to do that thankless job years ago) didn’t have a chance to get to it for a week and a half, I just had to take matters into my own hands.

I’m still pondering whether or not that was an intelligent decision. This is now day two of wasting time to get everything setup just the way I like it. Because I went from one monitor to two, I completely cleared my desk off and then started from scratch this morning. I think people thought I was either moving or had gotten fired! It is Friday, you know, and stranger things have been known to happen. Hahah! I’m still feeling my way around having lost a big chunk of desk space on the extra monitor and also the laptop. I wanted to set it up so that I could easily get to the laptop because the new docking stations are difficult to plug into. So now that’s taking up space, as well. It always feels nice to clean, though.

So, anyway, I’m now waiting for a DVD to burn, which is about as exciting as watching grass grow, except that I can work on other things at the same time. Then back to copying over data from the image of the old machine. Too bad I’ve already sucked down half of the 60 GB hard drive on the new one! Of course, a good chunk of that is the 15 GB image of the hard drive from my old laptop, so if I can get that burned to a dual-layer DVD (if it will fit), I can delete the image and free up a lot of space. Otherwise, I’ll just have to delete it anyway and cross my fingers that I don’t figure out a week or a month down the road that I needed something from it.

I had forgotten what a royal pain it can be to rebuild a computer. Since I only manage to do it at work every 3 years or so, my skills get quite rusty. 😉

On a different note, I’ve decided not to go to scrapbooking tonight, which may be slightly disappointing but hardly surprising to those gals. I haven’t gone in over 6 months, I think. I had every intention of going, until this week happened. LOL. The days have been so long this week, with early to rise, late to bed and lots of time at work in between. I’ve gone home every night this week and tried my darnedest to keep from falling asleep on the couch. So far, I’m 2 for 4. 🙂 As a result, I didn’t have a chance (or the energy) to print out the photos that I was going to use for scrapbooking. Kinda hard to scrap with no photos ready. Oh well! I think the girls have given up on me. Maybe next time… or not?
